What Is a Salwar Kameez? Anarkali, Churidar & More
The comfortable classic explained: what a salwar kameez is, its variants (Anarkali, churidar, palazzo), which fabrics suit it — and which occasions.
If the saree and lehenga are the festive stars, the salwar kameez is the versatile everyday hero of South Asian fashion — comfortable, elegant and ready for almost any occasion. But what is a salwar kameez, exactly, and what do words like Anarkali or churidar mean?
What is a salwar kameez?
A salwar kameez (also called a "suit") is a three-piece ensemble: the kameez (a longer tunic or dress), the salwar (comfortable trousers) and the dupatta (a scarf). Unlike the saree, there is nothing to wrap — you simply put it on. That makes it the easiest entry into desi fashion.
Kameez: the top
"Kameez" refers to the top — anywhere from hip-length to ankle-length. Its length and cut set the mood: a straight cut reads modern and everyday, a flared one festive.
The trouser variants: salwar, churidar, palazzo
This is where it gets interesting, because the "bottom" comes in many shapes. The classic salwar is roomy and gathered at the ankle. The churidar fits closely and bunches into fine, bangle-like folds at the ankle — hence the name. The palazzo falls straight and wide. The patiala is heavily pleated and especially airy.
The Anarkali: the dress among suits
The Anarkali is in a class of its own: a long frock-style dress, fitted at the bust and flaring out below, often worn over a churidar. Named after a Mughal legend, it is the most festive salwar-kameez style — ideal for Eid, mehndi or parties.
Fabrics: from lawn to silk
For everyday and summer, lawn is a favourite — a fine, lightweight cotton that breathes and feels lovely. Cotton and linen are everyday-friendly too. Georgette, chiffon and silk with embroidery lift the suit into festive territory. So a single garment can carry you from office to brunch to celebration.
Which suit for which occasion?
For everyday: a simple straight cut in lawn or cotton. For Eid and celebrations: a flowing Anarkali or an embroidered three-piece in joyful tones, with light jhumkas. There is plenty of sitting, eating and dancing — comfort wins. Our kameez collection has both. Need help with sizing? We advise personally.
